In 1916 extracted from a Narrative, prepared by Mary Bull in 2005 -

George Lees 13/6/1895 – 27/7/1916

George was the second son of James and Mary Ellen Lees, nee Keene.
James & Mary had seven children but by the time war broke out, Mary Ellen had died and also three of his sisters. His father James and older brother Will worked laying rail tracks for wagons in a quarry. It was a skilled job because the wagons which held a ton of stone each had to be pushed by hand to the 3 engines which took them to the main line and so they were not called up for war duties. George was running the family farm and so should have been exempt but was called up anyway. The family appealed against the call-up but the appeal was ruled out because it arrived too late.

In a series of 16 letters from George to his sister, Sarah, following his call up to Service in 1916, George gives an account of the life of a young recruit to the Army deep into World War I. He frequently expresses his concern for the running of the family farm, which he was forced to leave, and for the welfare of his family left at home. He writes of the training that he had to undergo in the Northumberland Fusiliers, at their depot at Scarcroft School in North Yorkshire, over a couple of months from March to 3 July 1916 when he wrote from Folkestone that he was to go to France that afternoon. His family received a pre-printed postcard from him dated 19 July and a letter saying that he had been transfered to the Lancs & Yorks Regiment. His Sister wrote to him in France on 24 and 31 July about the Harvesting at the farm and of his friends and family back at home. it is apparent that he was never able to return home from his training before he went to France.
Sarah received a Telegram from his unit in France sent on 29 July 1916 saying that he had been Killed in Action. A letter was also received from one of his soldier friends relating how George had been killed, a German shell having fallen on the dugout where he had been sleeping.

Mary Bull has these letters and also correspondence from the Army following his death, together with photographs of George under training in Yorkshire and of his original memorial in France and the subsequent Monument at the War Graves Cemetery.2
