Frank Bull was born on 31 March 1885 in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Aged 27, he emigrated to the USA on the S.S. Majestic of the White Star Line. Frank Bull was a second class passenger, one of 595 passengers on the ship and 190 second class passengers who set sail from Southampton on 12 March 1913 and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on 20 March 1913.
The records in the National Archives record that his contract ticket number was 265493 and that Frank Bull gave his occupation as a linguist. He gave the country of his last residence as being foreign, which suggests that the USA was not his first attempt at emigration, possibly borne out by an occupation as a linguist. The records in the US National Archives from Ellis Island also record that he was a linguist, and able to read and write. His last permanent residence was described as London.
His final destination was recorded as Chicago. Illinois and more specifically the Victoria Hotel in Michigan Avenue.
The immigration records also recorded that he had paid for his passage and was in possession of £76, he had not been in prison, an almshouse, an institution for the insane or supported by charity. He was not a polygamist or an anarchist and was in good mental and physical health, not deformed.
His appearance was recorded as being white, of medium height (5 ft 9¾ inches in 1913 and 1942) and build, with grey eyes and (light) brown hair (1913, 1918). In 1913 he was described as having a fair complexion. In 1942 he weighed 155 lbs., and his hair was grey, he had a ruddy complexion, and scars on his left shin
He next appears in the official records of the USA when he registered for the draft on 12 September 1918 with the Local Board for Cochise County in Tombstone, Arizona. He described himself as not working and gave his address as General Delivery [in effect the post office], Warren, Cochise, Arizona. His mother was listed as his next of kin.
He registered again for the draft on 26 April 1942 then aged 57 in Bergen County, New Jersey. He gave his address 521 Hudson Street, Hackensack, New Jersey, and his mailing address as 216 E.69, New York City. Presumably by this date his mother was dead and he chose not to give any other family members as next of kin, possibly because he had by this time lost contact with them. The contact name and address he gave was a Mrs Compton of 216 E.69, New York City. He was self-employed as a sign painter at 521 Hudson Street.
The 1891 U.K.Census listed him as a son of the Head of Household - Jonah Bull, at 17H Block, Peabody Buildings, Islington, Middlesex, who is recorded as -
