John Moon was left a Widower on the death of his wife, Theresa in 1875 in Bengal, India.
John Moon, a Labourer who was born in Ipswich in Suffolk, attested for the Royal Artillery Regiment at Worcester on the 11th. December 1858 at the age of 20 years and 6 months.3

No. 6439 Bombardier John Moon initially joined the Royal Artillery 10th Battalion as a Driver on 11 December 1858 and was transferred between Brigades until 3rd. April 1867 when he was promoted to the rank of Bombardier. After 9 years 280 days service, John Re-engaged in the Regiment at Murree in India for a total term of 21 years.
He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on 23 March 1869 and to Sergeant on the 7 June 1871. On the 7 November 1871 it is recorded that he was awaiting Trial by Court Martial where he was Tried & Reduced to the Rank of Gunner (no mention of the Charge against him is recorded.)
His Service included nearly 15 years in India from 14 July 1861 to 28 March 1876 but no details are made of the type and place of Service are made, except that the events in India i.e. the Indian Mutiny occurred during this period.
On his release from the Army his Character and Conduct are described:-
No. 6439 Bombardier john Moon's Conduct has been Very Good. He is in possession of 4 Good Conduct Badges and has been awarded a Silver Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct, with a Gratuity of £5/-/-. He is in possession of a 3rd. Class School Certificate.
He has been once tried by Court Martial and his Name appears 3 times in the Regimental Defaulters Book.
On his release from Military Service on the 21st. day of November 1879 he was described as:
Aged 41 years 6 months old; height 5' 6" tall; of Dark Complexion; Eyes - Grey; Hair - Grey; Trade - Labourer; Physical Description: Curved Legs & Small-Pox marks on Face. His Intended Place of Residence was to be 57 Victoria Crescent, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.3
