Thomas Rogers
ID# 5329, born about 1745, died July 1787
Thomas Rogers was born about 1745.1
Thomas Rogers was married to Ann Johnson on Thursday, 15 February 1770 at Church of St. Michael & All Angels, Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire, "Thomas Rogers of this Parish, Yeoman & Ann Johnson of the same Parish married by Licence".2
Thomas Rogers died in July 1787, in Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire.2
He was buried at the Church of St. Michael & All Angels, Earl Sterndale, Derbyshire, on Wednesday, 11 July 1787.3
The Rogers family have been farming this area for many hundreds of years.
(my grandmother was still a ‘Rogers’, so I have always been fascinated in the family.) I have an old cutting from a newspaper – I think it must have been from the Buxton Advertiser in the 1940s – which cites some great stories about old time ‘Rogers’ men – all seemingly christened John and Thomas!
There is evidently a document (somewhere!) from King Edward II in 1312 granting a free pardon to John Roger of Longnor, and other followers of Thomas Earl of Lancaster who captured and beheaded Peirs Galveston the King’s French ‘favourite’.
They also think that a Thomas Rogers from the mounted archers of Upper Dove Dale (from the Duke of Lancaster Estates there), was most probably the archer who killed Richard Duke of York at the Battle of the Bosworth to end the War of the Roses in 1487!!! This Thomas Rogers certainly had estates in the area at a peppercorn rent of a penny a year, held of the KIng “by tenure of souage* and fealty”, plus a, now long lost, seal depicting an hawk and a rose, said to have been given to a ‘Rogers’ in gratitude for saving the Duke of Lancaster’s life as above at the Battle of Bosworth. The rose was the emblem of the House of Lancaster, and the hawk the crest of the Stanley family – Sir William Stanley was, as far as I can see, was a ‘player’ of the highest magnitude, who kept fingers in many pies and a foot in both camps during the wars, and played his cards just right, ending up finally on the ‘right’ side at the right place at the right time, taking the crown off Richard’s head at the end of the battle and putting it on that of the Duke of Lancaster. A VERY wily old goat!
(*Souage - land tenure by agricultural service or payment of rent).
