     DEATH AFTER STRIKING TRAM.
Coroner Exonerates Driver From Negligence.
The Acting City Coroner (Mr. McCann), at an inquest held in the Coroner's Court yeaterday found that Charles Alexander Howden of Osmond street Hindmarsh. 75, agent, died on March 8 from pneumonia, following upon injuries received when he was struck by a tram car in King Wiliamstreet. Adelaide, on February 28. Upon the evidence before him there was no negligence on the part of the motor man.
Henry Dorling Elliott, undertaker, of Port road. Bowden, gave evidence of identification. Dr. Max Bertram Reid, resident medical officer at the Adelaide Hospital, stated that Howden was admitted on February 23. and died on March 8. He was suffering from concussion and a wound in the head on admission, and later developed pneumonia. Death was due to pneumonia following on the injuries.
George Andrew Kowalich, tram driver, of Archer street. North Adelaide, said that when crossing the intersection of Waymouth and King William streets he saw an elderly man come from behind some stationary motor cars and walk towards the east side of King William street. The witness sounded the gong, and as the man I appeared to continue crossing he applied the emergency brakes, and the man struck the near front corner of the tram, which spun him round, and he fell to the road. The tram stopped almost dead, and when he went to the man he found him lying on the road and bleeding from the head. The tram did not strike the man while he was on the ground.
Alfred Clarence Bull, Tramways Inspector, of Essery street. Norwood, said that he was on another tram on the opposite line and heard the gong of the other tram sounded. He saw a pedestrian strike the tram with his right shoulder, and the impact spun him round in front of the tram. The signals were set against the pedestrian at the time. Lester Henry Johns, tramway conductor, of Oakfleld avenue, Clarence Park, said that he was on a tram travelling to Colonel Light Gardens, and saw a man step from the kerb and walk towards the eastern side of King William street. He was more than half running, and apparently did not see the tramcar, but was looking at the traffic lights, which were against him. The emergency brakes were applied and the tram stopped immediately.
Mr. D. B. Ross watched the proceedings on behalf of the Municipal Tramways Trust, and Plainclothes Constable J. Buttfield assisted the Acting Coroner.⁵

     Motor Cyclist Injured In City Accident
When his motor cycle was involved in a collision with a car at the corner of Hanson and Angas streets, city, yesterday afternoon, Ivan Rilling, 69, of Alfred street. Parkside, received abdominal injuries and lacerations. He was, taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital by civil ambulance and admitted.
The car was driven by Alfred Clarence Bull, Chief Marshal of the Municipal Tramways Trust.⁷

     53 years in same job.
A man who started work when 12 and has been in the same job for 53 years will officially retire on Tuesday on his 65th birthday.
He is Mr. Alfred Bull, of Norwood, who started work as a tram conductor in 1899.
Mr. Bull said today: "I started work as a conductor because boys in those days received 15/ a week in that job, and grocer boys got only 6/ a week."
Had 12½-hour day
"I was working on the horse cars - in those days round the Kensington, Norwood, Burnside, and Marryatville districts," he added.
"We used to work 12 hours a day, and mostly seven days a week, but we sometimes got Sunday off," he said.
He said the smaller cars - double-deckers carrying 45 passengers were drawn by two horses, but there were also three-horse teams.
In 1909 he transferred to electric trams.
Mr, Bull was subsequently motorman, ticket inspector, a traffic inspector, and inspector in charge.⁸
