John Alexander Gurney was married to Mary Ellen Hammersley on Thursday, 22 November 1860 at Mount Pleasant Methodist Chapel, Leek, Staffordshire, 1860. Marriage solemnized at Leek in the Mount Pleasant Chapel in the County of Stafford.

This Marriage was solemnized between us, John Alexander Gurney, Mary Ellen Hammersley in the presence of us: Robt.(?) Hammersley, Emma Overton Hammersley.
Entry photocopied from Staffs Record Office Microfiche D3679/2/6/2 fiche 1of 2, Leek Mount Pleasant Wesleyan Chapel Marriages, Mon. 12th August 2002..1

The U.K.Census of 2 April 1871 listed him as a Brother of the Head of Household - Mary Ann Gurney, at Rodney Yard, Wakefield, Yorkshire, who is recorded as -
Mary Ann Gurney     Head     Unmarried     40     Ladies Outfitter     NFK. Norwich.2
John's entry for the 1871 Census was recorded as -
John A. Gurney     Brother     Married     35     Gentleman - from Rents of Land, Houses & Mills     NFK. Norwich.2

In the U.K.Census of 3 April 1881, John was recorded as residing at 105 Balls Pond Road, Islington, London.
     John's listing is -
John A. GURNEY     W     47     M     Norwich, Norfolk, England     Rel:     Lodger     Occ:     Non Conformist Ministerr
I could find no "Mary GURNEY", born in Staffordshire, of any age in the 1881 census CDs.     I then looked for a     John GURNEY in the 1881 Census born 1831 +/- 3 years- the only one found who was a Minister of Religion was the above.     He was also the only John A GURNEY of that age range of any occupation. The identification is not absolutely conclusive - the census John A GURNEY's     age, 47, is adrift by two or three years from his age given as "29" on the marriage entry in Nov 1860, but I'm assuming for now that Mary Ellen was dead by April 1881     .3
