- [S2000] County Record Office - Staffordshire, , Robert Hammersley's death (provisionally) dated 11th April 1863 :-
(a) As noted in GEDCOM file ham.ged, supplied January 2002 to DJH by Vicki HAMMERSLEY, Caer Haul, Llandissilio, Clynderwen.
(b) As noted in Staffordshire Advertiser, Saturday April 18, 1863; Page: 5 :-
"Deaths … on the 11th instant, at Mow (sic, should be 'Brow') Hill House, Leek, Mr Robert Hammersley, aged 50 years"
(c) In following week's issue of Staffordshire Advertiser, Saturday April 25, 1863 on; Page: 5 , however, the following notice appears under :
"Leek … Leek Improvement Commissioners … the meeting of this body was held on Tuesday last when there were present Messrs Alsop (chairman) C.Carr, Davenport, Brough, Hammersley …" .
The reference there to 'Tuesday last' implies that Robert Hammersley attended a meeting on Tuesday April 21st ! HOWEVER, see (d) immediately following :-
(d) In the next weekly issue of Staffordshire Advertiser, Saturday May 2, 1863 on; Page: 5 appears the following notice under :
"LEEK … ELECTION OF COMMISSIONERS - The annual election of eight commissioners, under the Leek Improvement Act in place of those who retire by rotation took place on Tuesday last. The retiring commissioners were Messrs W.Challinor, Ridout, T.Carr, Wooley, Ward, Davenport, Whittles and R Hammersley (dead). These were all re-elected, excepting that Mr Warrington was elected to supply Mr R.Hammersley's place. The other unsuccessful candidates were Messrs. Astley, Dean, Haynes, Sugden and Tatton."
(b), (c) & (d) were extracted by DJH from microfilmed copies of the "Staffordshire Advertiser (VOL LXVIII)" held in Shire Hall Library, Stafford, on February 4th 2002. It seems that in April/May 1863 the "Advertiser" may have been reporting on the Leek Improvement Commissioners meetings well over a week later than the meetings themselves, so that the references to 'Tuesday last' cannot be relied on to pinpoint absolute dates.
Conclusion, for now, is that Robert HAMMERSLEY died on 11th April 1863. - [S1881] The 1881 U.K. Census was taken on the night of 3/4 April 1881. PRO Ref: RG11 FHL Film 1341171 PRO Ref RG11 Piece: 0734; Folio: 52; Page 30.

This laid the 'ghost' of a childhood memory - when I was very small I overheard my grandfather, John Bull, mention "Uncle Bill Snape" in conversation with my parents - I had thought he'd said "Uncle Bill Snake" and so that became a bit of a family joke with my Mam & Dad.
I now believe that it was John Bull's Aunt Jane Snape (nee HAMMERSLEY) who sent him the letter (noted in my TMG data set), from 23 Snowden Road, Eccles, wishing him well for his marriage in October 1903 - I have the original letter which I previously thought was signed "Aunt Hamm…" which I had interpreted as "Aunt Hammersley" but I can now see that it could equally be read as "Aunt Jane". Elsewhere in the letter she refers to herself and "Uncle Wills" - presumably referring to John's "Uncle Bill Snake".
Finally, I found William Snape and wife, Jane E, in the 1901 Census, living at 23 Snowden Road, Eccles !7
