Frank Holloway; DoB - 3 September 1919 Male; Electrician's Apprentice Single.4
" Uncle Frank was a keen cyclist when at school and also a member of the Derby Harriers with his father. He was a prominent member of St Werburgh’s Church in Derby where he was a choir boy and a bell ringer. When WW2 was declared he rang, with others, a pop song of the day ‘Riding down the Sunset Trail’ which may have been one of the last times the bells were ever rung. He started an apprenticeship to be an electrician after leaving school and received further training after joining up.
I also looked out my 2005 diary in which I had written : Uncle Frank's WW2 Army number: Private 1903032 Royal Engineers, finishing as Lt Sgt with same number. He was sent to France, first to a place named St Paul or Pol or similar spelling. The grandparents received a letter saying he had met a man from St Paul's. Then his ear trouble which he had had from about thirteen I think, flared up and he was sent home on a hospital ship and had the mastoid bone removed. My mother used to visit him in Liverpool where he was digging people out of the burned out property. He told me one chap asked what time it was and then died of a heart attack, from the shock presumably. Anyway, he later went to Egypt, (again the letter to my grandparents read something like, Ernie Got Your Present Thanks). In each case he was involved in laying railway track etc. to get the necessary goods up to the front line, although he was involved in mine clearance too. He had done a course but when an officer put six others with him on the job, three of whom hadn't been trained, a few well chosen words were uttered. He refused to speak to the man when they later met in Cairo as three of the men were killed on a mine clearance operation. I have just one photograph of him in the desert but strangely he couldn't remember even one name of the friends he was with.
He became involved with diesel engines on the railways and for some years worked in Nigeria where he was responsible for maintaining the rolling stock.
Following his marriage he lived at 200 Upper Dale Road, Derby. While there, one of his hobbies became fish keeping and breeding for which he won many prizes in competitions. Stamp collecting was another hobby, one in which he also encouraged me. Following a move to live at Hulland Ward near Ashbourne he was able to indulge his interest in gardening and became passionate about fuschias. Perhaps his one sadness was not to have managed to create a new one himself before arthritis made gardening impossible, and leading to the loss of one leg" - Quotation by Heather Eaton - 2008.5
