"The attached image is the works of John Whitehurst 111, drawn by himself as found in the book on John Whitehurst 1 by Max Craven. He was there from about 1835 until his death in 1855 when bought by Wm Roskell of Liverpool, and again sold in 1862. This then became home of Wm Burrows who developed a mineral water plant there (see 1871 census). The building was demolished in 1878 for the LNER to be forced through, but Burrows teamed up with Sturgess and the firm developed at the Spa Works on Spa Lane and the Spa Inn. Not relevant really, but I had an interesting hour or so poodling through the records.
What is important is that John SHARDLOW bn 1823 worked here, certainly under Roskell, if not before, although it seems likely that he may even have served an apprenticeship here as he is described as a clock maker on his marriage certificate of 1844. From Arthur Shardlow’s notes, jotted from talking to his father, dad also said that he helped erect the clocks in St Lukes & St Johns churches in the town but I haven’t found further evidence of that" H.D.E.5
