Death of Mrs. Rachel Holloway
The death occurred at her residence “Redhouse”, Eldon Street, Goulburn, of Mrs. Rachel Muriel Holloway, aged 79, a resident of Goulburn for more than 60 years and a former Mayoress.
Born at Parramatta, she was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Duncan McInnes and was educated at Bourke Street Public School, Goulburn.
Following her marriage, she went to South Africa. Her husband, the late Leonard Holloway, and his brothers, trading as Holloway Bros., were master builders and during the Boer War carried out military contracts.
Mrs. Holloway returned to Goulburn in the early1900’s and her husband carried on as a master builder here. He built quite a number of residences and Auburn Street shops.
He also built his own home, “Redhouse”, which was among the first tiled homes in Goulburn. This accounts for the origin of the name of the home.
The late Mr. Holloway was Mayor of Goulburn during a period towards the end of the First World War. He died in 1930.
The late Mrs. Holloway is survived by two daughters, Marjorie (Mrs. G. H. Leslie) and Rita (Goulburn), four brothers, Charles. Monty, Ewen and Mervyn (Goulburn) and a sister, Cora (Lewisham). Two sons, Lionel (1st A.I.F.) and Alan, two brothers, Alex. and Leslie, and a sister, Annie, predeceased her. Four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren also survive.
The service, conducted by the Dean of Goulburn, Very Rev. A. C. King, at St. Saviour’s Cathedral to-day, preceded interment at the General Cemetery. The Rev. L. Murchison was the organist.4

Mrs. Emily Louise Holloway, wife of Mr. Richard Holloway, died at her late residence 36 Fairlight-street, Manly, on Saturday at the age of 54, from an internal complaint. Mrs. Holloway had been failing health for years, and had undergone several operations. Mr. Holloway was for years a prominent public man in Goulburn. He was Mayor of the city, was prominent in Municipal and other works, and took the keenest interest in politics. He left for Sydney a few years ago to take up a Government position. Mrs. Holloway was of a kindly disposition, and was much esteemed. She was the mother of Mr. C. Percy Holloway, the well-known storekeeper, of Auburn-street, Goulburn. The other sons are Messrs. Frank and Leslie Holloway, and there is one daughter – Miss Amy Holloway.4

ACTING-SERGEANT LESLIE JAMES HOLLOWAY - 55th Battalion, A.I.F.
Leslie James Holloway, son of Mr. Richard and Mrs. Emily L. Holloway, was born at Goulburn, New South Wales, on 30 September 1890. He was educated at King's College, Goulburn, and joined the service of the Bank on 16 March 1908 at Henty. His subsequent transfers were to Coolamon in April, 1908; Ganmain, August, 1908; Coolamon, March 1911; and Coonamble in November, 1911; and to Head Office in March, 1915.
He enlisted a year later and sailed for England as corporal, but reverted automatically to the ranks on landing. However, he received his stripes in England again in 1917, and became acting-sergeant in April. Subsequently he was offered an appointment as sergeant on the Training Staff, which he declined in order to get into the firing line.
In May, 1917, he was on his way to join his unit in France, when he was intercepted and detailed to assist in holding the line at Bullecourt on 4 May. He was killed five days later by a shell at Bullecourt.3

He was buried in Zandvoorte.4
