Drowning fatality at Long Whatton
Distracted father's sad discovery
The tragic circumstances attending the death of Olive Bull, aged 26, the daughter of Mr John Bull, farmer of Long Whatton, were inquired into by Mr H. J. Deane, coroner for South Leicestershire, at the Home Farm, Long Whatton today (Tuesday).
John Bull father of the deceased, identified the body, and said that on Saturday afternoon his daughter went to gather kidney beans from the garden. She did not return, and he did not see her alive again. Before going to the garden she had said she would gather blackberries after she had picked sufficient beans, and so her absence did not cause uneasiness for a time. As she did not return, however, the witness became somewhat alarmed, but told his wife not to worry, as the deceased had probably found a nice lot of blackberries. At 6 o'clock, their anxiety became intense, and the deceased's mother thought something might have happened to "Cis", so he made a search around the farm, but failed to find her. No information of his daughter could be gathered from the neighbours so he visited the meadows fearing she might have been attacked by a bull.
Witness at this stage broke down and said he did not know where to look for his daughter till he remembered her saying she was going to gather kidney beans. It flashed across his mind that the top was off the well in the garden. He hastened to the spot, and seeing that the nettles round the well were broken down, he procured a hay rake, but failed to reach the bottom. He then tried a rail, and almost satisfied himself that he felt something. He fastened a drag to the rail and after some time caught something, which proved to be his daughter's foot. He leaned ovewr and tried to get hold of the body, but it slipped into the water again. He ran for assistance and with the aid of some of the workmen on the farm he recovered the body.
In answer to the coroner, witness said his daughter was short-sighted and wore glasses. She was quite happy at home, and had no trouble whatever, and he knew of nothing to disturb her in any shape or form.
Herbert Atkin, labourer, who helped in the search for the deceased, said the nettles were a foot high, and sufficient to hide the opening of the well. The slab lay about a yard away and was covered with weeds. The body was only recovered from the well with great difficulty. He could not see whether the nettles had been trodden down owing to the darkness.
Dr Bedford of Kegworth, said there was a large abrasion down the deceased's left cheek, and two slight bruises over the eyeballs, as if the deceased had fallen against the side of the well. Death was due to asphyxia from drowning.
The coroner: My idea is that the deceased stepped backwards into the well.
Witness: Yes, backwards and sideways.
The coroner in reviewing the evidence, said he thought it was a fair supposition for the jury to say that in turning the deceased had accidentally fallen into the well.
The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death" and expressed their deepest sympathy with the parents.4 Olive Bull was buried in Long Whatton, Leicestershire, in September 1912.
