The following details of the Oakamoor Works are taken from various internet sources:
In 1790 the Cheadle Copper and Brass Company acquired a tinplate works at Oakamoor and began smelting copper, mostly for factories in Birmingham. In 1852 the works were purchased by Thomas Bolton & Sons of Birmingham. By 1890 there was no more room for expansion at Oakamoor so they began building at Froghall. In 1940 Froghall became the company headquarters and in 1962 the Oakamoor works closed down and demolition work began. The Bolton company continues in business today as Bolton Copper Limited, although many of the Victorian factory buildings at its present Froghall headquarters have recently been demolished and the land cleared for redevelopment. The Copper works are the Staffordshire Moorlands' last link to the historic copper-mining industry that was centred on the nearby Manifold Valley and its famous Ecton Copper Mines.
The works made copper wire, strip, sheet, bar, rod and tube, as well as machined components for the electrical and engineering industries.
During the Second World War the factories made wiring components for Spitfire fighter planes.
The fame of the Oakamoor foundry centred on the production of submarine telegraph cables. During the 1840s and early 1850s Boltons were involved in eight such projects including the production of 660 miles of copper cable to connect the French mainland with Corsica (1854). Despite these successes the greatest challenge to telegraph engineers was to span the gulf between the Old and New Worlds across the Atlantic Ocean. During the 1850s plans were developed and funding sought for an ambitious project and in 1856 the Atlantic Telegraph Company was formed to lay a cable between Newfoundland and Europe before 1862. The sheer scale of the project and the short timescale represented a huge engineering challenge and Boltons, in the spirit of the age, accepted this challenge with relish. The first cable was produced at the company's Oakamoor works in 1856. Over 108 tons of copper were used to produce 20,000 miles within 5 months. However, time constraints resulted in rushed manufacture and in the end only 60 tons of wire were produced by Boltons. After an unsuccessful attempt in 1857 the entire length was successfully laid and connected the following year. The first message was transmitted on 17 August 1858. However, poor quality materials, hurried production techniques and low electrical conductivity resulted in the line failing after the transmission of only 700 messages between England and America. Undeterred, Boltons continued to perfect their production techniques and patented a new kind of telegraph wire on 2 January 1862. In September 1863 a new order for 150 tons of copper wire based on the original (1856) design was placed with Boltons for use in a new Atlantic cable. This was increased to 200 tons early in February 1864 and the first batch of Atlantic wire was drawn at Oakamoor on 3 June that year. One of Brunel's steamships was hired to lay the cable and it commenced operations on 23 July 1865. After laying over 1,000 miles of cable it snapped and more was ordered from Boltons. Production of the new cable was finished on 17 May 1866, and on 27 July 1866 the laying of the second Atlantic submarine cable was completed. The 1865 cable was subsequently found, and the snapped end was spliced with a new cable. Both were tested and found to work perfectly. The Bolton works continued to be a major player in the manufacture of submarine telegraph cables, although after 1880 the demand fell and the company looked elsewhere for their contracts.7
