"In the years 1903-04, the lives of Reuben and Ellen Holmes changed dramatically, as the entire Holmes family moved from Derby to Toronto, Ontario. In all likelihood, they sailed from Liverpool, England to Halifax, Nova Scotia. From Halifax, they made their way to Toronto. By 1910, the following information appears in a directory for the city of Toronto: “HOLMES, Reuben baker 1366 Bathurst, h same.” It was from this location (photographed in 2005) that Reuben operated the Holmes Bakery. Another key source of information is the Canadian census of 1911. It shows Reuben and Ellen at 1366 Bathurst Street, with son Ernest, and his wife, Isabella. Also living with Reuben and Ellen were two nephews, Bertram Alton and Andrew Brooks (see below). By 1918, according to the City of Toronto directory, Reuben listed his occupation as “elevator operator;” in 1920 he was a “ship builder;” and in 1922, he was a “bailiff” at city hall. Reuben passed away in Toronto on April 17th 1929.

"On January 23rd 1911, he married Isabella (Bella) O'Connor. The daughter of William and Mary O'Connor, she was born in Dundee, Scotland in May of 1884. On his marriage license, Ernest Holmes provided another clue about when the Holmes Family arrived in Canada, as he stated that he had been living in Toronto since June 1st 1903. According to the Canadian Census of 1911, Ernest & Bella lived with his parents. Like his father, Ernest listed his occupation as baker. On December 7th 1914, Ernest completed his Paper of Attestation to also join the Canadian Expeditionary Force. As with the 1911 census, he again listed his address as 1366 Bathurst Street, and his occupation as baker. Not surprisingly, he served as a baker in France.
Following World War One, Ernest returned to his family in Toronto. However, in the later 1920's, Ernest and Bella moved their three children, Isabel, Mary, and Frank, to British Columbia.
Isabel married Ken Wilson, and lived in Portland, Oregon as of 1969.
Mary married Harry Jacobson, and lived in Vancouver.
Frank lived at the family home on Lynn Valley Road. "

Ernie and Bella eventually came to live at 935 Lynn Valley Road in North Vancouver. Ernest died there in 1967; Bella passed away in 1969.1
