John was a Carpenter and appears variously from 1809 to 1859 in Colton, Colwich and Stowe near Stafford, in Mancetter, Warwickshire, in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, in Derby and in Leicester, and probably in Shropshire. It is thought that he may have been working in the canal and/or railway construction of the time.³

     Probably from a Sales Item. Belmo(n)t Green is a well-known bit of Common Land between Tutbury and Hanbury. On the 1840 Tithe Map, there are two fields Cabbage Bank and Cabbage Flat, just North of the Green. By 1840 the fields were part of Lower Castle Hayes Farm.

"Had a great one a few weeks ago. Thomas Tipper, your ref 6778, one of the sons of our patriarchs John Tipper and Elizabeth Wall, died “about 1757”, inferred from his wife appearing as a widow when a child was born to her in that year. But there’s no burial recorded for him. I’ve now come across the following in the Findmypast newspaper archive:
"We hear from the Woodmote Court*, held at Tutbury in the County of Stafford, the 30th day of September 1755, that on Thursday then last, the Coroner's Inquest sat on the Body of Thomas Tipper, an old** and notorious Offender in the Chace of Needwood, commonly call'd the Forest of Needwood, who was shot by Mr.Turnor, one of the Keepers of the said Forest. It appeared that the said Tipper (with one of his Accomplices) shot at a Deer, the Report of which Shot, occasioned Mr.Turnor and his Servant (who were within two hundred Yards) to make to it, and Tipper, notwithstanding Hue and Cry made, and oft charged to stand to the King's Peace, refused to do; on which Mr.Turnor's Servant dismounted, and seized Tipper by the Collar, but Tipper resisting, threw Mr.Turnor's Servant down, and arrested his Gun (which was loaded with Powder and Ball) from him, and immediately presented it towards Mr.Turnor, and said Now Damn you, hav'at you; on which Mr.Turnor shot him dead: Therefore the INQUEST found what Mr.Turnor did, was entirely out of Necessity to preserve his own Life." "Our" Thomas, aged 31, is the only local candidate, and disappears from the records before his wife's 1757 birth of a further child. There are no other Elizabeths of child bearing age in the locality, and I am confident they are the correct protagonists of this sad tale.
This would be dramatic confirmation of the suspicion that our Tutbury and Hanbury ancestors, living on the edge of the Needwood, were wont (forced?) to enjoy the fruits of the forest from the wrong side of the law. I must have told you of my recollection of a Burton Daily Mail “100 Years Ago Today” article from the 1960s or 70s
along the lines of “100 years ago today, the last man to be publicly hanged for Poaching in Staffordshire, so-and-so Tipper …" I’ve never been able to trace the article, a court record or a candidate, and it’s remained one of my research Holy Grails. I wonder whether my memory or the date is faulty and it’s somehow got conflated with this latest event?", he was survived by his wife Elizabeth Tipper.⁴

     Elizabeth Bathew was born around 1720.

     From 1769 to 1787 there are annual payments to "Widow Tipper" of 5/- to buy Coals. In 1781-2 the ref. is to Mary Tipper, in 1783-4 to Eliz. Tipper and from 1785-7 again to Widow Tipper.³

     Elizabeth Tipper died in May 1788.³

Register Entry states - "stopped by the girl's father she being a minor" - according to the Vicar's notes - but this Elizabeth is 30 by then??³

     Elizabeth Tipper was married to James Mosedale on Thursday, 24 September 1789 at Tutbury, Staffordshire, By Licence. (The Marriage Licence Bond, held in Lichfield Diocesan Records, gives James Mosedale as a Bachelor aged "19 and upwards", a Husband man of "Hanbury Park in the Parish of Tutbury" (actually Hanbury), the son of Joseph Mosedale a Farmer of "Hore"(=Hoar) Cross, who was also party to the Bond; James signed with a Mark. Joseph signed; the Bond was sworn before the Vicar of Egginton. Elizabeth is given as a Spinster aged "26 and upwards" of "Hanbury Woodend in the Parish of Hanbury". This would make James Mosedale the step-father of James Tipper, but unlikely to be the natural father - he would have been c15 at the time of his conception, and also James junior did not take the Mosedale name after his mother's marriage. The claim by Elizabeth's father that she was under age must be spurious - he may have been intent on preventing his daughter, an unmarried mother, from marrying a 19 year-old, by any means he could think of).^3,1

     St. Mary's Church Baptismal Register Entry - "Thomas, the first child of Samuel and Sarah Tipper, was Baptised."¹

     Thomas Tipper was married to Anne Elton on Sunday, 15 December 1793 at St. Mary's Church, Tutbury, Staffordshire.¹

     Between 1794 and 1809 Thomas and Anne were parents of probably five surviving children and three infant deaths, but no surviving male line beyond 1902.²

     Between 1798 and 1812 Thomas and Anne were stalwart members of the Methodist Chapel - "Numbers seem to have remained fairly steady in this record, at around 12 or 14, though the names change with the exception of Thomas and Ann Tipper and Sarah Wright, who remained constant for many years". ("Methodism in Tutbury" file, held by Tutbury Museum, referring to the Circuit Book covering Tutbury 1798-1812; Thos. Elton and Ann Elton are also listed.)²

     In 1811 Thomas was one of the 117 persons who comprised the 16 day "Watch" of Ann Moore, the "Fasting Woman" of Tutbury; Ann Moore, a native and resident of Tutbury, was a notorious imposter who pretended to have lived without eating or drinking from 1807 to 1813; a second watch including Sir Oswald Mosley and numerous Midlands clergymen, led to her admitting her deception.²

     Thomas Tipper was left a Widower at the age of 58, on the death of his wife, Anne in January 1832 in Tutbury, Staffordshire.⁴
