James Tipper
ID# 22884, born about 1713, died 1799
Father* | Thomas Rowley born say 1680 |
Mother* | Ann Tipper born 16 Nov. 1684 |
'Well, James certainly looks a very interesting young man – congratulations! I think it’s got to be pretty likely that he’s our man – right age, right place, etc. I can’t see any eligible male Tippers in the area that could be his father; so if he has a Tipper mother instead, then Ann Tipper b1684, herself illegitimate, certainly fits the bill. (Hannah Hawkins is also of the right age, but there is no evidence that she ever married Thomas Tipper 1681-1706).
I see on the IGI that there is a marriage in Audley on 09.11.1715 of a Thomas Rowley and Elizabeth nee Dale, who later have several children baptised in Barthomley from 1718 onwards – he would fit quite nicely as the Rowley father of James in 1713. And if James’ mother was deserted by the father, then it’s more likely that James would have been brought up using the name Tipper.' extracted from an email from Chris Tipper in reply to Linda Powell - 29 December 2012.1

He was Baptised on Thursday, 7 November 1686 in St. Peter's Church, Alton, Staffordshire .

John Tipper was married to Elizabeth Wall on Monday, 23 September 1715 at St. Werburgh's Church, Hanbury, Staffordshire, "John Tipper of Tutbury married to Elizabeth Wall".2,3
John and Elizabeth settled in Hanbury - they had probably seven sons, are the foundation of this family tree, and lived happily ever after!4
John and Elizabeth may have been living in Tutbury - from 1739 to 1747, "Jno Tipper" is a regular recipient of charity from Richard Wakefield Charity in Tutbury, in the form of coal and cloth, and in 1747 Elizabeth Tipper received "6yd Tammy @ 16d = 8/- ".( The Wakefield's Charity Cashbook 1738-1828 has been transcribed by Robert Minchin of Tutbury Museum). John and Elizabeth appear to be the only candidates, and their sons Thomas, Joseph and George have later Tutbury connections; there are no entries for individual recipients between 1748 and 1768 in the Cash Book; from 1769 to 1780 there are annual payments to "Widow Tipper" of 5/- to buy Coals, but this is more likely to be Elizabeth nee Bathew, widow of Thomas bn. 1723.5
