Deane, Esq., coroner, on Tuesday last, on the body of William Carey Freeman who died on Sunday last, from injuries, it is alleged, which he received on the 25th. September last, when ascending the shaft of a coal pit. Mr. Christopher Hall, surgeon, said, when he was called in to see the deceased, on the 26th. September, last year, he found him suffering from fractures of the dorsal vertebrae of the spine, with pressure on the spinal cord, producing paralysis, caused by a heavy blow or fall. He continued to attend him up to the day of his death, and had no doubt that it resulted from the injuries he had received. - William George Pelcher went into the pit with the deceased, on the 26th. September last, and explained that the deceased, when ascending in the bucket, was knocked against the pipe which crossed the shaft, by which he sustained the injuries before stated. The Inquest was adjourned till 2nd. April."8

The inquiry occupied several hours, but there were no new facts disclosed. The jury, however, stated that having found a verdict of accidental death, they intended to add to their finding a statement that they were of the opinion that more care should have been taken by the managers of the coliery as to the persons placed in responsible situations and placed in dangerous work, and that the rules now produced ought on all occasions to have been more strictly acted upon."8"

It appeared from evidence that the accident happened on the 27th. of September, 1874, and death ensued on the 21st. of March last, and this coming to the knowledge of Mr. Hendy on Monday, the 22nd. of March, he at once wrote to the manager, to acquaint him of the death, and the manager, by the next post, wrote to the Inspector, but the letter did not reach him until Thursday morning.
