"Dad joined the Midland Bank when he was sixteen (after getting his school certificate). He spent a few years in Droitwich, living at Toc'H (a hostel for professional men). In about 1934, he returned to Derby where he met Mum.
He was made manager of the Duffield branch shortly after they were married and he remained in that job until about 1956 when he was promoted to manage the Normanton Road branch in Derby. At about that time, he bought his first car and he (& Mum) learned to drive.
Dad took early retirement in 1970 (to avoid decimalization!).
He was a high ranking Freemason (like his grandfather Joseph Bland). He played golf (badly) right up to his 80th year and was twice captain of the Chevin Golf Club. Well over a hundred people attended his funeral."2

"W.H.Selby was a railway employee, first as a clerk, later, as a signalman.
I have a poem that he wrote when he was courting Sarah. He must have been closer to her family than to his own parents. He reported the deaths of both of Sarah's grandparents.
In 1900, when Sarah died, he lived at 79 Crewe Street
In 1901 when Thomas died, He lived at 7 North Street (with the Needhams).
In Kelly's 1903 he lives at 35 Middleton Street.
When his father died in 1915, only a hundred pounds went to each of his three children; the remaining thousand pounds went into a trust for his daughter Anne Eliza Kennedy. William Henry did get a one third share after Annie Eliza died.

The family lived in Idridgehay for the first years of John's life (he remembers me well - age 2).
They moved to London, spent the war years in Chester, moved back to London (Harrow Weald). Uncle Stan was an Assistant to the Chief Accountant at British Railways when I visited him in London in 1960.
They retired to Wells where he became a senior lay figure in the Cathedral.
