Both Signed. Witnessed by her sister Emma.1,2

     This was the only Marriage celebrated in lonely St. Leonard's between 26 February 1852 and 26 November 1856.1

     Craigmaddie House, Stirlingshire, was bought in the late 18th century by James Black, Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1808 to 1809, who married Hannah Shortridge. Later after several changes of ownership it was bought by James Spens BLACK, manufacturer, of the firm John Black & Co., Glasgow. One should not confuse the Lord Provost with "James Black & Co.", calico printers (Glasgow people) and "John Black & Co.", printers (Paisley people).1


     James Spens Black, son of James Black and Sophia Harriet Spens, died in February 1867,"aged 51 years."1

     James Spens Black wrote his Will in 1867; Scottish Archives have the Will registered in 1867 of James Spens Black of Craigmaddie, mentioning 2 wives.1

     Wilsone Black, son of James Black and Lillie Wilsone, was born in Barony Parish on Friday, 10 February 1837.


     Wilsone is recorded as the Head of Household in the U.K.Census of 7 April 1861 at 4 Albany Place, York Town, Frimley, Ash, Surrey. This Census included Wilsone, as one of two residents in the Household, as follows:
          ; Wilsone Black     Head     Unmarried     24     Captain - Army     Scotland.1

     Wilsone Black was married to Florence M around 1868.

     As a Major he fought in South Africa in 1879.


          In the 1881 U.K.Census, held on Sunday, 3 April 1881, Wilsone was recorded as the Head of the Household at Infantry Camp, St.Botolph, Colchester, Essex, also in the Household were Florence M Black and Lilias M. Black,
     the listing for the Household is -
          ; Wilsone Black     Head     Married     44     Lieut. Colonel - Soldier     Scotland.2
          ; Florence M. Black     Wife     Married     33     ---     Nova Scotia.2
          ; Lilias M. Black     Daughter     11     ---     Nova Scotia.2

     Major-General Wilsone Black was a British soldier and colonial administrator, who became an Acting Administrator in Hong Kong for a period between February to November of 1898. He was eventually succeeded by Sir Henry Arthur Blake, who became the 12th Governor of Hong Kong.3


     Wilsone Black, son of James Black and Lillie Wilsone, died in 1909.

     Robert Cowan was married to Margaret Barton Black on Saturday, 22 July 1826 at Gorbals, Lanarkshire, Scotland.1

     Dr. Robert COWAN was Professor of Medical Jurisprudence and forensic medicine at Glasgow University. His mother was Helen MCCAUL, daughter of Dr. MCCAUL, Minister of the Tron Church, Glasgow from 1782 to 1797; she married on 14 Jan. 1795 in Glasgow and died 8 Dec. 1825 in Barony parish; his father was Dr. Robert COWAN, surgeon at the Royal Infirmary from 1796 to 1807, whose will is registered in Glasgow on 20 Oct. 1826.1


     Robert Cowan died in 1841.1
