Hello Martin,
This is in reply to your emails of this morning and Tuesday.
Thanks for the background information on that part of Leek where they lived – Overton Bank figures a lot and I had noticed that bosses and workers seemed to live fairly cheek to jowl.
As regards ‘loose’ Mary #21004, she is one of my mysteries as well, and the isolated 1871 Census entry has been relegated to my “strays” list until now. Your suggestion is that she is Mary #22694, listed twice on the Census, once as Mary Keates with her husband at 35 Alsop Street, and once as Mary Tipper by her Davenport employer, with whom she may have been permanently or occasionally resident. I certainly think that’s feasible – we’ve both seen a good number of examples of people appearing in two different places on a Census, and I agree with what you say about the possibility of her maiden name being used by the employer. The middle name of Mary Davenport Keates is also intriguing, as well as Dorothy’s 1891 position in a later Davenport household, living away from her own family in an identical way. This could just be a coincidence, however, and it’s also possible that Davenport’s Mill played such an important part in the locality generally, to give rise to the adoption of the middle name of Mary Keates junior. Playing devil’s advocate, there’s the question of the 1871 census birthplace given for Mary #21004 as “Kingsley”, whereas Mary #22694 and her siblings all consistently say Oakamoor – though again this could be an employer’s mistake. More importantly, Mary #22694 had two infant daughters at the time of the 1871 Census, the younger of them, Emily, just three months old, and I wonder if it is likely that their mother would have been in a position to stay away from home at an employer’s house, even just occasionally overnight.
I do have another candidate for ‘loose’ Mary, who fits exactly, apart from one rather fundamental detail. She is Sarah Harriet Tipper, your reference #22416. In early April 1871 she was 25, born in Kingsley, and we have not found her elsewhere on the 1871 Census. She is from the family of George Tipper and Hannah nee Mosely, the Kingsley farmers, who were about to make their epic emigration to Ontario, Canada. The rest of the family were scattered about a bit at the time, prior to embarking from Liverpool – George was in Birkenhead, Hannah still on the farm in Kingsley with the four youngest children, and the older children in Glossop and elsewhere. But Sarah Harriet is missing, and was certainly of an age to be in Service somewhere in the district. But of course, there’s the fundamental problem of the christian name. Sarah Harriet tended to call herself Harriet on other Censuses, but whether she’s “Sarah” or “Harriet” can she really be “Mary”??? All I can say is that again we have both seen examples of similar errors, most probably where enumerators have made mistakes in completing the definitive census sheets.
A puzzling one. I’d go as far as to say that 'loose' Mary is one of these two girls – based on the principle that people don’t appear out of or disappear into thin air, certainly not in the Victorian era when there are so many available records. But as to which one she is....???!!!
Best wishes
