Quiet upbringing for tragic Ian
Updated on the 13 August 2008
Murdered 69-year-old Ian Beeston, described as a "lovely chap" by neighbours in Thailand, spent his formative years in Harborough.
He was brought up in Knights End Road, Great Bowden, and attended Market Harborough Grammar School (now Robert Smyth School).
Mr Beeston was a member of the town’s air cadets, the 1084 (Market Harborough) Squadron, and is also thought to have been a keen scientist at school.
His mum Lilian was a radiographer at the Cottage Hospital in Coventry Road and his dad is believed to have hailed from south-east Asia.
Mr Beeston also had an elder brother Kim, also known as Bill or Billy.
Lilian later married another man, Arnold Tipper, a director of a prominent Harborough firm. They were killed in a car crash in Buckinghamshire in 1966.
Murdered Mr Beeston married Oundle woman Margaret Gardiner in the 1960s before moving to London. They had two children together, Timothy and Julian. One of the sons has moved to America and has been informed of his father’s death.
Margaret’s brother Bob Gardiner, who still lives in Oundle, told the Mail yesterday that the couple divorced about 20 years ago.
Margaret now lives in Lincolnshire but did not wish to comment on the death.
Mr Beeston is known to have worked at Ford’s Dagenham plant in Essex as a design engineer before it closed in 2000.
From there, the trail goes cold. It is not clear when his first marriage ended or where he met his second wife – the Thai woman accused of plotting his death.
Mr Beeston is said to have married her nine years ago but no-one in Roi-Et knew for certain when they settled in Thailand.
A spokesman for the Thai embassy in Britain said yesterday they thought the couple had been in Thailand for three years.
Childhood friends and school contemporaries spoke to the Mail this week about Mr Beeston’s teenage years in Harborough during the 1950s.
Peter Jackson, of Medbourne, recognised Mr Beeston’s photo when he saw reports of the murder in national newspapers this week.
He said: “He went to the grammar school in Harborough and was brought up in Great Bowden. I saw him many years later when he was working at Ford’s Dagenham plant.”
Another Great Bowden childhood friend of Ian, who did not want to be named, said: “He was a high achiever and quite clever. I remember going round to play with his model train station, which was much better than a television. We lost contact but I knew him when he was around 13.”
A fellow Harborough Grammar School pupil added that he vaguely remembered Ian as head boy at one time and a bit of a science “boffin”.

Lillian I. Beeston is entered into the Project as part of a One Name Study,
It is our intention to attempt to link ALL persons with the Surname of TIPPER and their families,
originating in Staffordshire and Derbyshire.5
