James Stuart Orwin

     James Stuart Orwin was born in London in 1882, his Birth was Registered at the Pancras Register Office in the Apr-May-Jun Qtr. of 1882.1

     Service in the Royal Navy     1909 - 1932
     Following his Graduation from Edinburgh University, James Stewart Orwin qualified for Naval Medical Service having been appointed Surgeon in His Majesty's Fleet on 14 May 1909
     The Navy List published in March 1911 shows that on the 14 May 1909, James was 'under instruction', together with 14 other trainee Surgeons at the Royal Naval Hospital HASLAR near Gosport, in Hampshire.
     In March 1911 James is serving on H.M.S. NEW ZEALAND - a Naval Battleship based in the Home Fleet - as Surgeon James S. Orwin M.B. (joined this ship on 4 January 1910.)
     He is next shown on a Passenger List of the P & O "MALWA" which departed London on 28th July 1912 bound for Hong Kong as Orwin Surg.J.S.
     The Lists next show James as the Surgeon aboard HMS CLIO, a Sloop, on the China Station but attached to Chatham.
     In November 1914 & April 1915, James is the Surgeon listed on H.M.S. ILLUSTRIOUS, a Battleship based at Devenport, having joined the ship on 1 August 1914.
     James transferred to the Royal Naval Barracks at Devenport on 27 November 1915, and is listed together with 2 other Surgeons.
     He was promoted to Acting Staff Surgeon on 6 December 1916 aboard H.M.S. CONCORD, which was a C-Class Light Cruiser, commissioned in that month and was assigned to the defence of the Eastern Approaches to the English Channel and Straits of Dover. She remained in the squadron through the end of the war in November 1918 and until March 1919.
     In the Lists of January 1919, James is now the Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander on H.M.S. CONCORD but is serving again at the Royal Naval Barracks, Devenport in February 1919.
     Awarded i. 1914 - 15 Star     ii. Victory Medal     iii. British War Medal
     James was promoted to Surgeon Commander on 14 November 1920
     On 21 October 1921 he is serving on H.M.S. CAIRO, a light Cruiser based at Devenport until at least 1924.
     The List of February 1929 shows that James was serving on H.M.S. ROYAL SOVEREIGN at Chatham from 14 May 1928
     In July 1931 James was stationed at the Royal Marine Infirmary, Portsmouth from 11 June 1930
     The Navy List, published in January 1933 shows him as 'Retired Surgeon Captain' and as having retired on 10 January 1932.2,3


     James Stuart Orwin was married to Gladys Charlotte Kendle, daughter of George Ernest Gould and Eliza Adelaide Sabina Bull, in London in 1919.
     Their Marriage was recorded in the Wandsworth Registration District in the Jul-Aug-Sep Qtr. of 1919. GRO Register shows "Kendle or Gould."4

     James Stuart Orwin and Gladys Charlotte Orwin are shown on the Passenger Manifest of the P & O Ship "Rampura" which Departed London for Yokohama on 22 June 1934.

          In the 1939 Registration, held on 29 September 1939, James Stuart Orwin was recorded as the first person in the 3 person Household at 3, The Esplanade, Plymouth, Devon. Also in the Household was Gladys Charlotte Orwin plus 1 officially closed record,
     the listing for the Household is -
          ; James S. Orwin;     DoB - 10 January 1882     Male;     Medical Practitioner, Captain - Retired     Married.6
          ; Gladys C. Orwin;     DoB - 29 October 1883     Female;     Unpaid Domestic Duties     Married.7

     James Stuart Orwin died on Saturday, 1 September 1951 in the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter, Devon, his Death was Registered at the Exeter Register Office in the Jul-Aug-Sep Qtr. of 1951, He was survived by his wife, Gladys.8

     Probate for James's Estate was granted at Exeter.
     Probate Register Entry - " James Stewart Orwin of Gussiford, Exmouth, Devonshire, who died on 1 September 1951 at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Exeter. Probate was granted at Exeter on 13 October to Gladys Charlotte Orwin, Widow.
