John was usually known as Jack to distinguish him from all the other John Tippers!4
Jack made up his mind at a very early age that he was going to be an Engine Driver when he grew up. He was possibly influenced by watching the factory shunting engines at New Mills. When the family lived in Matlock Bath in 1919, Jack, aged 14 joined the Midland Railway at Rowsley Sidings and Engine Sheds as an Engine Cleaner, the dirtiest of jobs, but where all aspiring Engine Drivers had to start.
He progressed to Fireman and then to Driver in the usual manner, which meant that he had to leave home for lodgings at a relatively young age.5

Their Marriage was recorded in the Derby Registration District in the Jul-Aug-Sep Quarter of 1931.7,8,5
As a main line Driver he had to spend a lot of time in railway lodgings even after his marriage.
Jack remained an Engine Driver until the advent of diesel locomotives, which he hated and refused to drive. Because of his long service he was made a superintendent of outgoing goods traffic with an office on Derby Station.
Toughened by years of coal shovelling on the footplate he regularly walked the 3 miles to and from work in all weathers, despite having smoked Capstan Full strength cigarettes for most of his adult life. His father had caught him smoking at Bakewell and made him smoke one of his cigars, hoping it would make him sick and cure him of the habit. Jack emerged from the toilet, where he had been locked in, and asked when he could have another one, his father just gave in!.
Jack was really ill for the first time in his life in 1966. His doctor treated him for severe influenza, but Jack died of a massive embolism in a main artery. Although very ill he had insisted on attending his mother's (Lizzy's) funeral a few weeks before his own.5

Edgar's entry for the 1911 Census was recorded as -
Edgar William Tipper Son 5 --- DBY. Horsley Woodhouse.4
Edgar was a non-conformist in every sense of the word - he arrived at 7 months instead of the usual 9, he was the one who fell out of trees, tumbled off walls, etc., who wore out his boots faster than any other child even when put into iron shod clogs. His father's attempts to discipline him were cheerfully ignored. Edgar was the one who friends refused to look after when his mother had to attend Stockport Hospital; not because he was naughty, but because things just happened to him.
He was clever at school, but remained at the bottom of his class - he explained to his father that he was nearest the door and also nearest the open fire.
If there is such a thing as a woodworking gene passed on from one generation to the next then Edgar received more than his share. He knew exactly what he was going to be, even before he could say carpenter or joiner.
Edgar moved with the family to Hayfield, Ilkeston and then to Bakewell, carefully maintaining his chosen position in the classroom at the various schools he attended. Shortly before leaving school he went to Mettum's Joinery Works in Bakewell, announced to Mr Mettum that, his Dad was Sergeant Tipper and he wanted to be a Joiner "please". The story is that Mr Mettum was so surprised that all he said was "I'd best see your Dad then". Edgar got his apprenticeship, but without the usual indentures so that he could move if or when his parents were transferred.
When the family moved to Matlock Bath in 1919 Edgar simply repeated the process. He walked to Matlock and found Willgoose's Builders and Contractors, walked in, told them who he was, what he had already done and that he wanted a job. The senior Mr. Willgoose, who was totally blind, overheard the conversation, called Edgar to him, felt his hands, ran his fingers over Edgar's head and face and told his son to set him on. Edgar stayed at the firm until the family, now with 5 children, moved to Clay Cross when his father was promoted to Inspector in 1923. Here he worked for a firm of coach builders, Reeve and Kenning, finding himself equally adept at sheet metal work. He was laid off in the 1930's depression and found it impossible to find work in a small town totally dependant on coal and iron.5
Edgar William Tipper, son of John Tipper and Mary Elizabeth Frost, was married to Gladys Pugh in St. Bartholomew's Church, Clay Cross, Derbyshire, in 1930.
Their Marriage was recorded in the Chesterfield Registration District in the Oct-Nov-Dec Quarter of 1930.6,7
His father bought an end of terrace miners cottage in Market Street and rented it to them. Edgar built a workshop in the back yard and started to do anything for anyone providing it was in wood. When not engaged on an actual job he made sewing cabinets, inlaid glove boxes, blanket chests, etc and sold them on. He made coffins for the local undertaker and even helped out at the funeral parlour. He built poultry houses and a porch at 'Woodside1, Stretton when his father retired.
One of his more ambitious projects was to build a pair of semi-detached houses at Holmegate, Clay Cross along with Bill Flavell, the local undertaker. How this was financed no-one can remember, but when all the bills had been paid they just broke even after paying themselves a reasonable wage.
In 1938, with war preparations going on a pace, Edgar found himself employed by the local Civil Defence Unit attached to the Council,
With a steady wage and a very small rent he could not understand why they had never got any money. When local shopkeepers started demanding cash for long overdue bills he at last realised that he had not only been keeping his own family, but his wife's entire family as well. The marriage had been deteriorating for some time and this brought matters to a head, Edgar solved the problem by borrowing a council lorry in his dinner break, he and a friend loaded it with most of the furniture and Gladys, taking her and it back to her parents in Pilsley and unloading it all on their front garden.
As was usual in those days Edgar had to supply Gladys with evidence for her to obtain a divorce, thus Edgar spent the longest and most boring night of his life chatting and playing cards in a hotel room with an unknown lady provided by his solicitor.
John (1878) and Lizzy tried to maintain contact with Edgar's two children, but their mother, Gladys, did not encourage it so all contact was eventually lost. Nothing is known about Joan, but John was reported in the 'Derbyshire Times' as having received a small prison sentence in 1958?5
In the 1939 Registration, held on 29 September 1939, Edgar William Tipper was recorded as the first person in the 4 person Household at 64 Market Street, Clay Cross, Derbyshire. Also in the Household was Gladys Tipper plus 2 officially closed records,

; Edgar W. Tipper; DoB - 25 April 1905 Male; Builder & Contractor Married A.R.P. Rescue & Demolition.8
; Gladys Tipper; DoB - 21 June 1910 Female; Unpaid Domestic Duties Married.9
Whilst waiting for his divorce Edgar met Lillian Hodgkinson, a nurse at Willersley Castle, Cromford, but they were unable to marry.
Meanwhile Edgar had been sent to Leicester under the war time 'Direction of Labour Act' to work at Carboddies Ltd, who were under contract to the Air Ministry.5
Edgar William Tipper and Gladys Tipper were divorced in 1942.
Edgar William Tipper, son of John Tipper and Mary Elizabeth Frost, was married to Lilian M. Hodgkinson in Leicestershire in 1943.
Their Marriage was recorded in the Blaby Registration District in the Apr-May-Jun Quarter of 1943.10
Like his father and brother Jack, Edgar smoked from being very young. He chose 'Black Cat' cigarettes and saved the coupons to obtain all manner of free gifts eg. the Tipper's first wireless set.
In the Summer of 1953 Edgar began to be seriously unwell and had two major operations for Stomach Ulcers. Recovering from these he was diagnosed as having Lung Cancer in October 1958 and he died on 27 January 1959.
Lilly nursed Edgar at home until ne died, leaving her to raise their 5 sons single handedly - a task she fulfilled admirably.
The notice of the Memorial Service on 29 January 1959 explains Edgar's final act of non-conformity. It was to be several years before he was finally laid to rest.
"He had donated his body to Birmingham Hospital Cancer Research Centre."11
Edgar died in 1959. Edgar's Death was Registered at the Leicester C. Register Office in the Jan-Feb-Mar Quarter of 1959.12
