"4th June 1915 - Gallipoli: On this day the Hood, Howe and Anson Battalions led the Royal Naval Division's attack, followed by the Collingwood Battalion. The first wave successfully captured its objective. However the failure of the neighboring French attack meant that enfilading fire caught the RND. Consequently, when the Collingwood Battalion was ordered forward, practically the whole Battalion was annihilated. A few survivors, with men from the Howe and Hood Battalions, pushed steadily forward and captured their second objective. However they could not hold on and by evening they were back in their own positions. 60 of 70 officers and 1000 of 1900 men were lost by the RND" (HMS Collingwood Association website).".4

His oldest brother Wifred was killed at Gallipoli on 04.06.1915. Poignantly, Edward himself joined up on eight days later, falsifying his age as 19 - it is not clear whether he would have been aware of his brother's fate by then. His army papers (very dilapidated) are on Ancestry, including the following personal statement when he was charged with Fraudulent Enlistemnt in 1917 for failing to declare this earlier service when he re-enlisted (!): TR/5/82633, Pte E Tipper states "I served in the Iniskillen Fusiliers for 12 months 78 days, of which I was in France 3 1/2 months. I was sent home on account of being under age. I was transferred to Army Reserve Class W about November 1916. Being 18 years old on the 8th March 1917, I took it that I was eligible for service again and enlisted at Morpeth. I did not declare my previous service as I was never asked any questions concerning it. I did not receive Army Form W3195, produced, neither did I receive any notice calling me up for service. I simply presented myself because my chums who were 18 were ordered to go and I thought I was eligible to go and I was also desirous of going". The charges [very sensibly] did not proceed to a court-martial. Other details of his war service that can be gleaned from the documentation include: He was a Miner, height 5 feet 2 inches,of 73 Juliet Street, Ashington when he re-enlisted in the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, West Riding Regiment. During 1917 there are a number of minor charges on his conduct sheet - awol for two and three days at the end of leave periods, failing to get his hair cut, appearing unshaven on medical parade etc. During this period he is promoted Lance-Corporal, but loses his stripe for the second awol offence. He was then sentenced to 118 days detention at Derby Detention Barracks on 22.12.1917 (the details of the offence are indecipherable), but on reaching his 19th birthday, his Regiment asked that he be released for service in France, where he moved on 27.03.1918. He appears to have survived the War, but the date of his demobilisation is indecipherable. He recived the Victory Medal on 08.02.1919. All in all, Edward appears a brave, simple lad, a bit trouble-prone but wanting to do his bit - and perhaps it was good to get away from the Pit.5
1921 Edward aged 21 born England, a Miner, intended occupation Farm Hand, arrived 15.04.1921 St John, New Brunswick from Liverpool, on the Empress of France (Canadian Passenger Lists, Ancestry). His Passenger's Declaration gives similar details, he is single, he is carrying approximately $250, his passage was paid by "Overseas Settlement", he is intending to remain permanently in Canada, he has no intended destination with relatives or friends, he is carrying a ticket for the C(anadian) R R(ailway), his next of kin is his father Edward of 73 Juliet Steet, Ashington.6
In 1922, Edward Tipper left Canada, presumably for the USA.6
Edward Tipper aged 32 born Fenton, England, Single, a Machinist, intended occupation Labourer, previous residence Bay City, Michigan, intended residence Montreal, next of kin his mother PH Tipper of 35 Welfare Crescent. Ashington, carrying $96, previouslly resident in Canada 22.04.1921-1922 in Montreal, rejected for entry into Canada 31.07.1931 at Windsor, Ontario, and appealed [outcome unknown] (Canadian Immigration Service, Report of Admissions and Rejections, Ancestry).
